Twist Apple

A 'twistappel' is a dutch expression for a point of contention, about which there is considerable disagreement, even quarrel.

The word 'twistappel' comes from Greek mythology. The goddess of strife, Eris, threw the apple among the guests at Peleus and Thetis's wedding. She had written on the apple: "for the fairest". The goddesses Hera, Pallas Athena and Aphrodite claimed this title. A quarrel, a 'twist', broke out between the three goddesses, just as Eris had expected. The impossible task of choosing between them was assigned to Paris. Hera promised him power if he chose her, Athena promised him wisdom, and Aphrodite promised him the most beautiful woman in the world. Paris then judged Aphrodite to be the fairest. The elopement of the most beautiful woman, Helena, by Paris then led to the Trojan War.

The apple has more symbolic meanings, for example the story from Genesis in which a fruit (usually represented as an apple) started the expulsion of Adam and Eve from paradise.

In the Netherlands, the word 'twistappel' acquired a special meaning around 1960, when a wall painting by Karel Appel in Amsterdam's city hall caused a major riot.

Message: You seem a bit upset that your theory has not been published in NATURE. I can imagine why they rejected it. First of all, it seems that you do not know that dark matter and dark energy are different things. Second, ...

Message: Richard Feynman: "I'm not looking for the ultimate laws of physics. I'm only trying to find out more about the world, and if there is a simple ultimate law that explains everything, well, then it is. That would be a nice discovery. But if we find that we look at an onion with millions of layers and we get sick and tired of peeling a new layer, then that's the way it is. When we investigate the world, we must not decide beforehand how it must look like... Whether nature knows an ultimate, simple, unifying beautiful form is an open question, and I do not argue either for one or for the other... My whole life I have heard people say that the answer is just around the corner."
